Contacting Lawmakers

The most effective way to make tobacco prevention a priority for South Dakota is to contact your lawmakers and let them know tobacco issues are a top priority for you, a voting constituent. Your calls, letters and faxes can make the difference in the vote on tobacco issues in South Dakota and nationally.

Following these simple tips will help you make the most of your lawmaker contacts:

Legislative votes happen very fast. When an issue needs immediate attention by your lawmaker, a phone call, fax or e-mail is the best way to contact your lawmakers.

If you have written to your lawmaker about an issue, it is a good idea to call and ask whether he or she received your letter and answer any questions he or she may have.

When you have reached your lawmaker on the phone simply say: "Hello, Rep. or Sen. (their name). My name is (your name). I live in your district in (your city). I am calling to ask you to support/oppose (issue, bill, etc.). I feel strongly about this because (state facts, personal experiences, etc.)." Or, "I recently wrote you a letter asking you to support/oppose (issue, bill, etc.). I am calling to see if you have any questions about the importance of supporting/opposing this (issue, bill, etc.).

If you reach your lawmaker's answering machine or staff, remember to leave a brief message with your name, town, phone number and position.

If you are asked a question you do not have an answer to, simply tell your lawmaker "I do not know the answer to that, but I would be happy to find out for you." Then call your advocacy staff and get the information you need to follow up with your lawmaker.

Remember your senators and representatives are interested in hearing from the people they represent. By contacting them you are not imposing, but rather you are helping them to know more about the issues they must decide. The more informed your lawmakers are on the issues, the better job he or she can do in representing your district. It is up to you to educate your legislators; they are generalists on tobacco issues, you are the one with insight and information about the topic.
